Job Type: volunteer position
Opportunity location: Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge
Closing date (if specified): 31 Dec 2010
Opportunity Description:
Volunteer field assistants are needed for a graduate study on the response of large mammalian predators to riparian corridor restoration at the Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge (SRNWR). Field sites will be visited during four one-month sampling sessions, Spring-Winter 2010. INDIVIDUAL JOB DURATION IS NEGOTIABLE, ALTHOUGH APPLICANTS WILLING TO WORK IN THE FALL WILL BE GIVEN PRIORITY.
Field assistants will participate in equipment set-up and take-down approximately once every 10 days during each sampling session. Equipment consists of motion-activated cameras, GPS Connect Modems, and protective boxes in which the cameras and modems will remain while in the field.
Other responsibilities will include weekly visits to SRNWR during the sampling sessions for basic equipment maintenance (e.g. battery installment). These trips will involve driving to selected restoration sites at various units of SRNWR, located along 70 miles of the river between Red Bluff and Princeton. Some off-road walking will also be necessary.
This will be a first-ever attempt to expand SRNWR monitoring efforts to include large mammalian predators! For more information, email: vderugin@sfsu.edu. Applicants please send: (1) a CV or Resume, (2) a letter of recommendation (if available), and (3) at least one other contact reference.
Requirements: Aplicants must have or be working towards a degree in wildlife, biology or related field. Applicants must be physically fit (i.e., able to walk off-road) and have a genuinely positive attitude at work.
