Subject: Applied Environmental Education Course in Namibia
INTERNATIONAL TRAINING COURSE
IN APPLIED ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Course Sites, Dates, and Sponsors: An international course in Applied Environmental Education will be held from January 26th through February 6th, 2004, at the Headquarters of the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) in Otjiwarongo, Namibia. The course will be sponsored and conducted by the National Zoological Park, Smithsonian Institution, (SI), Environmental Education and Conservation Global (EECG), and CCF. The CCF is located about 200 km north of the Republic of Namibia’s capital, Windhoek. While CCF will be the main venue a visit to Etosha National Park or Waterberg Plateau Park, which are within a few hours of CCF, will also be arranged during the course.

Course Content and Design: The goal of the course is to demonstrate how participants can use education, communications techniques, and social marketing strategies as tools to promote more environmentally sound behaviors. Specifically, the course focuses on designing education campaigns that will encourage responsible action in various target audiences such as present and future resource users and decision makers.

The course will make extensive use of case studies, field trips, simulation exercises, small group discussions, demonstrations, guest speakers, school activities, and individual projects. Participants will use hands-on activities to reinforce the concepts taught and will be encouraged to explore how these concepts can be adapted to fit their particular cultural and geographic circumstances. The emphasis will be on relevant, practical instruction tailored to the participants' needs and interests. Course instruction will be in English.

The long-term goal of the course is to foster the development of a cadre of professionals that can implement resource-based education, communication, and social marketing strategies. Upon completing the course, we expect participants to teach this applied environmental education model to their colleagues through workshops and seminars and to students through the formal education system.

Who Should Apply: The course is most appropriate for those who are teachers or educators at government agencies, non-government organizations, or academic institutions. University students and graduates interested in applied environmental education are also encouraged to apply.

Course Fee and Scholarships: The course fee is $1,250, excluding airfare. However, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo will cover all training expenses (i.e., room, board, educational resources, instruction fees, course related activities, and travel during the course) of Namibians who are selected to attend. It will also provide a limited amount of support to non-Namibian participants in the form of partial tuition waivers or airfares. All non- Namibian applicants requesting partial scholarships must submit a letter justifying their need for financial support with their application. They must also confirm that they have already secured financial support from other sources to supplement the partial scholarship.

How to Apply: Applicants should submit the following five items:
