PACIFIC CONSERVATION BIOLOGY JOINS SCB'S PUBLICATIONS

The Society for Conservation Biology's exhibitor booth at the December 2003 International Wildlife Management Congress in Christchurch, New Zealand had a slightly different look. Booth visitors were surprised and delighted to find an addition to the SCB family of publications--Pacific Conservation Biology!

The affiliation of Pacific Conservation Biology with SCB is an exciting partnership designed to promote, support, and broaden the reach of Australasian conservation and wildlife management research. "Although Pacific Conservation Biology has been highly regarded as an independent regional journal for years, seeing it advertised within the context of SCB was energizing," said SCB Project Manager Autumn-Lynn Harrison, who attended the Congress.

The joint efforts of Surrey Beatty & Sons, publishers of Pacific Conservation Biology (PCB), the Australasian section of SCB, the Executive Office, and SCB's Board of Governors came to fruition on 13 December 2003, when SCB's Board of Governors unanimously accepted a Memorandum of Understanding that highlighted five areas of collaboration between SCB and PCB.

1. SCB will promote subscriptions to PCB among its members. Pacific Conservation Biology will be advertised on membership renewal forms and SCB's Web site.
2. SCB will promote submission of journal articles to PCB.
3. PCB will promote SCB membership among its subscribers.
4. PCB will promote the activities of the Australasian section of SCB and of SCB overall.
5. PCB will promote and publish sound research in conservation biology in the Australasian region.

Responsibility for all activities of PCB will remain with Surrey Beatty & Sons. Surrey Beatty will have access to the advice and support of SCB's leadership, including representation of a member of the Australasian section on PCB's editorial advisory committee.

Likewise, SCB will gain the perspective of the editor of PCB, who will hold ex officio seats on both the Board of Directors of the Australasian section and the Publications Committee of SCB. The editor of PCB will make up to four pages available in each issue of the journal, free of charge, for contributions from members of the Australasian section, including "news and views," opinion pieces, and editorials. Submission inquiries should be addressed to Harry Recher, hjrecher@pacific.net.au.

The Australasian section long has been supportive of creating a partnership between SCB and PCB. The section extends special thanks to Ivor Beatty (Managing Director of Surrey Beatty), Harry Recher (editor of Pacific Conservation Biology), Mac Hunter and Deborah Jensen (past and current presidents of SCB, respectively), and Alan Thornhill (Executive Director of SCB) for helping to facilitate discussions and make the partnership come together so smoothly.
