UPCOMING ANNUAL MEETINGS

2002 -- Canterbury, England

Plans are well underway for SCB's 16th annual meeting, People and Conservation, which will be held from 14-18 July 2002 and hosted by the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology at the University of Kent at Canterbury. The British Ecological Society has agreed to co-host the meeting. Planned highlights include a concert in Canterbury Cathedral, the famous World Heritage Site. 2003 -- Duluth, Minnesota

The 17th annual meeting of the Society of Conservation Biology will be held in Duluth, Minnesota, USA from 29 June to 2 July 2003. The meeting will be hosted by a suite of units within the University of Minnesota: Center for Water and the Environment, Natural Resources Research Institute, Minnesota Sea Grant, Continuing Education, and Department of Biology. Co-hosts of the meeting include the University of Wisconsin, Superior; Northland College; USDA Forest Service; The Nature Conservancy; USEPA Mid-Continent Ecology Division; Duluth Audubon; Minnesota Department of Natural Resources; and National Park Service. The theme of the meeting, Conservation of Land and Water Interactions, will focus attention on water, forests, wetlands, the Great Lakes and other large lakes of the world, and associated biodiversity issues.

The meeting will be held at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (www.DECC.org) near the waterfront of Lake Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake in terms of surface area. The Twin Ports of Duluth/Superior (http://visitduluth.com) are the western gateway to the Great Lakes and collectively have a population of 200,000. Additional attractions in the region include the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) and adjacent Quetico Provincial Park in Canada; Apostle Island National Lakeshore; Isle Royale and Voyageurs National Parks; Chequamegon-Nicolet, Chippewa, Ottawa, and Superior National Forests; St. Croix National Scenic Waterway; the Superior Hiking Trail; and the headwaters of the Mississippi River at Itasca State Park. Early registration and reservations for lodging and entry in the BWCAW are strongly encouraged. Questions or comments can be directed to scb@nrri.umn.edu.

2004 -- Host proposals invited!

The SCB Board of Governors is soliciting proposals from organizations that would like to host the 2004 annual meeting. Proposals from any geographic region will be considered. To obtain a copy of the format for proposals email Richard Knight, knight@cnr.colostate.edu. Deadline for receipt of proposals for the 2004 meeting is April 2002.
