Education committee news: Conservation literacy standards

In order to help stimulate the development of conservation biology curricula and courses of study at all levels, the Education Committee has been working to develop a set of "conservation literacy standards." These standards are not being developed as the first step toward any kind of SCB-controlled certification program. Their intent, rather, is to provide a source of guidance for students and teachers who want to know what the SCB thinks is important to know in order to be a well-trained conservation biologist.

After more than a year of development within the committee, we would now like to open the discussion about the standards to the entire membership. We will host an open discussion about the standards at the annual meeting in Hilo this July. To make this discussion as useful as possible, and to allow members who cannot attend the meeting this year to provide comments, we have posted a copy of the current version of the standards on the web at www.middlebury.edu/~trombula/standards.htm. We look forward to hearing from you all.
