SCB WORKSHOP AT THE WORLD CONSERVATION CONGRESS, AMMAN, JORDAN

In October 2000 the second World Conservation Congress (WCC) will take place in Amman, Jordan. This is the triennial meeting of IUCN (the World Conservation Union), the world's largest conservation-related organization, which brings together states, government agencies, NGOs, and scientists in a worldwide partnership.

SCB (a member of IUCN), in collaboration with IUCN's Species Survival Commission (SSC), is organizing an interactive workshop to be held at the WCC on 7 October. The objectives of the workshop are (1) to influence conservation biology research agendas to be framed to address major problems in practical conservation management and (2) to promote effective links between conservation biologists and environmental managers. Various organizations will be invited to present their own views on the most pressing questions that need to be answered in the current biodiversity crisis. SCB will use this opportunity not only to present key conclusions from its own effort to define a research agenda for conservation biology, but also to find some new linkages to help our good science base inform conservation practice. For more information about IUCN see http://www.iucn.org/; for more information on the WCC and the interactive workshop, see http://www.iucn.org/amman/index.html.

I am particularly interested to know of SCB members who intend to be at the Amman meeting. Please let me know if you are and I will make sure that you are kept abreast of SCB's activities there.
