SECOND SYMPOSIUM ON MARINE CONSERVATION BIOLOGY

21-26 JUNE 2001

SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY

In response to growing interest since the first Symposium on Marine Conservation Biology at SCB's annual meeting in Victoria, British Columbia in 1997, Marine Conservation Biology Institute (MCBI) will hold a second Symposium on Marine Conservation Biology next summer in San Francisco, California. Co-sponsors include SCB, the President's Council on Environmental Quality, and U.S. Department of the Interior.

The second Symposium will be an international forum for established researchers and students in natural and social sciences and for science-minded managers and others interested in the science of protecting, restoring, and sustainably using biodiversity in the world's estuaries, coastal waters, enclosed seas, and open oceans. It will feature
1. Invited papers, contributed papers and poster sessions
2. Skills workshops
3. A participatory forum on funding for research and other policy issues
4. Special accommodations for reporters to encourage coverage of emerging issues
5. A video night to showcase participants' research-related footage
6. Displays by publishers and other vendors
7. Sign language and foreign language interpreters upon request
8. Field trips to natural, scientific and cultural resources

A Scientific Advisory Committee of international experts is helping to shape the meeting's structure and content. Register and submit abstracts electronically at www.mcbi.org. Conference coordinator Julie Morrison will be handling all logistics. For information, please contact her (toll free) at (877) 712-3777 or jmevents@bigsky.net. Please direct all inquiries on scientific content to Lance Morgan, (425) 883-8914, lance@mcbi.org. Registration is limited to 700 people, so we encourage you to register as soon as possible.

Major funding for this event comes from the Pew Charitable Trusts and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. We invite other foundations, individuals, companies, academic institutions, NGOs, and government agencies to join as funders.

Important note: The second Symposium on Marine Conservation Biology is a separate event from SCB's 2001 annual meeting in Hilo, Hawaii. The annual meeting also will have some marine themes.

MCBI is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to advancing the science of marine conservation biology and promoting cooperation essential to protecting and restoring the Earth's biological integrity. Headquartered in Redmond, Washington, MCBI also has a public policy office in Washington, D.C.
