CONSERVATION BIOLOGY IN PRACTICE: A NEW SCB MAGAZINE-STYLE JOURNAL

The Society for Conservation Biology announces a new magazine for conservation professionals. Designed to complement Conservation Biology, Conservation Biology in Practice will make current conservation biology tools, techniques, and case studies more accessible to practitioners, policy makers, and others who do not have the time for, access to, or interest in reading the original literature.

Each issue will feature Case Studies highlighting lessons from successes and failures of on-the-ground conservation initiatives; Feature Articles offering a range of thought-provoking ideas and information; Tools and Techniques providing concise reviews of software, equipment, and new technologies; Research and Policy Notes with selected abstracts in ecology, conservation, and natural resource management; Numbers in Context featuring a concentrated look at conservation data, trends, and relative values; as well as reviews of books and other publications. Conservation Biology in Practice will be published six times per year (four times in the first year) at an annual subscription fee of US$30. The first issue will be available early 2000.

To support the launch of this new magazine, SCB is seeking partners in the form of sponsoring subscribers. Sponsoring subscribers are agencies or organizations that support the magazine and its mission by purchasing a block of subscriptions. The support they provide will be twofold. First, sponsors provide startup funds to launch the magazine and make it high quality, relevant, and accessible. In addition, by distributing the magazine within their organization, sponsors provide exposure for the magazine and help jump start the flow of ideas and information between scientists, practitioners, and policy makers.

To be a sponsoring subscriber, an organization must purchase a minimum of 500 subscriptions at $30 each ($15,000). Names of sponsoring subscribers will be displayed prominently on the inside cover of each issue. Sponsoring subscribers also will have a seat on the editorial advisory board such that they have a voice in shaping the magazine and making it relevant to the needs of their managers
