The 15th annual meeting of the SCB will be held in Hilo on the island of Hawaii from 30 July to 4 August, 2001 at the University of Hawaii's Hilo campus. The meeting's theme will be Ecological Lessons from Islands. A special symposium, Ecosystem Sustainability in Oceanic Islands -- Is It Possible? will be presented by the meeting's co-host, the Pacific Island Ecosystems Research Center, Biological Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey.
Hilo, a delightful seaside town, lies at the base of the world's largest active volcano, with an ongoing eruption 25 miles to the south. An array of parks, refuges, and preserves, ranging from coral reefs and rainforests to alpine ecosystems, hosts a rich endemic fauna and flora. Of particular interest are Hawaiian honeycreepers, silverswords, and picture-winged Drosophila. The island also offers a close view of threats to insular biodiversity caused by invading alien species. Field trips may include Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, the summit of Mauna Kea volcano, and assorted coral reef sites. Post-conference excursions may include Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, Haleakala National Park on Maui, Alakai Swamp on Kauai, and a dive tour of the Hawaiian Islands.
Based on interest, a charter flight from the west coast will fly directly to Hilo, cutting costs and time.
