I am pleased to announce that SCB will begin a new publication in January 2000,
Conservation Biology Digest. Aimed at practitioners of conservation biology, the
magazine-style digest will make current conservation biology tools, techniques, and case
studies more accessible. The digest will create a bridge between academic journals,
decision-makers, practitioners, and the media and fill a critical gap by
1. Emphasizing news, data, and practical experience--building bridges between
applications, management, biodiversity protection, and public policy
2. Providing an outlet for applied conservation science research and results, thus
enhancing the credibility of the science being applied in the field, as well as increasing
communication, and potentially collaboration, between practitioners and academics
3. Creating a venue for publication of lessons and data from case studies--highlighting
successes as well as failures
4. Offering busy practitioners an accessible format (editorially and graphically),
including short papers, pull quotes, summaries, and sources for further information.
Kathy Kohm, an editor, writer, and researcher, will be the first editor of the digest.
Kathy brings to the job more than 10 years of experience producing natural resource and
environmental publications. She previously served as Editor of Endangered Species Update
and
is author and editor of several books, including Balancing on the Brink of Extinction and
Research Priorities for Conservation Biology. You will have an opportunity to meet Kathy
and
to hear more about the digest at the annual meeting.
