Symposia and Special Sessions

A major theme of the 1997 Annual Meeting is marine conservation biology. Several symposia have been organized to bring this topic to the attention of SCB members and bring scientists and managers from the marine field to the conference. The principal marine sessions have been organized under the auspices of the Symposium on Marine Conservation Biology by Elliott Norse, Marine Conservation Biology Institute. Several other symposia on marine and non-marine topics and on specific taxa, techniques, or concerns also have been organized.

Symposium on Marine Conservation Biology

  • Organizer: Elliott Norse, Marine Conservation Biology Institute

Session leaders and topics include

  • Stuart Pimm, University of Tennessee: Effects of fishing on marine food webs
  • Katherine Ralls, Smithsonian Institution National Zoo and Barbara Taylor, National Marine Fisheries Service: Dealing with uncertainty in marine conservation
  • Jon Lien, Memorial University of Newfoundland: The role of social sciences in marine conservation biology
  • Robert Richmond, University of Guam: Recruitment in marine species
  • Peter Auster, University of Connecticut; Tundi Agardy, World Wildlife Fund-U.S., and John Ogden, Florida Institute of Oceanography: Disturbance and effects of mobile fishing gear on benthic species and ecosystems
  • Les Watling, University of Maine: Conservation biology and marine ecosystem management
  • Rom Lipcius & Rochelle Seitz, Virginia Institute of Marine Science: Marine protected areas
  • Michael Hawkes, University of British Columbia: Conservation of seaweeds and eelgrasses
